This balneario (rent a swimming pool) overlooking Laguna Catemaco with a view of the distant Sierra Santa Marta deserves a mention, because it is the closest place to Catemaco where you might want to take a swim, unless your hotel has a pool. Laguna Catemaco itself is not an inviting place to swim in, because of the heavy sedimentation as a result of neighboring deforestation.
Except for holidays and vacation periods, the place is empty, and the restaurant is then dysfunctional. The 50 peso per person entrance fee is excessive and the avaricious orchid growing owner will even try to collect that if you are only sight-seeing after driving up the dirt road a little past the hospital to the north of Catemaco.
But, DAMN, the view is fantastic. The small Laguna Amolapan near the entrance is also worth a visit. At various times the laguna served as a crocodile and duck breeding farm. At present it houses sunk automobiles.
