La Barra, population 318, sits on the tip of a sandspit separating the Gulf of Mexico from the Laguna de
Sontecomapan. Most of the coastal area consists of environmentally threatened sand dunes and
recurrent marine turtles nests which have miraculously survived being trampled by the surrounding cattle
pastures.
The small village scratches out a living from fishing and catering to both local and national tourists. Most of
the year its beaches and restaurants are desolate and reserve miles of pristine shore for beach combers.
Numerous palapas dotting the sand at the gulf inlet beckon visitors with a plethora of fresh seafood.

A novel way to enjoy this "beach resort" is to take the water taxi
from Sontecomapan to La Barra, bypassing about 5 miles of
considerably bumpy road which is being paved about 1 mile per
year.
For adventure take the ferry across the laguna and continue
south, or catch a boat ride to Los Amigos for lunch across from
La Barra.
