The closest approach to the Rio Grande de Catemaco from Catemaco is along the shores at Matacalcintla,
both a fee based balneario and river bath.
Usually the area is deserted despite exceptionally beautiful views of river rapids along a haphazard trail.
The balneario, (30 peso entrance fee), occupies a hillside near the river with assorted antiquated spring
fed pools and has now built a cabaña for visitors. Its restaurant is usually limited to snack food.
Nevertheless the owner is intent on protecting and reforesting his small slice of heaven, which is now for
sale.
The nearby shallow river is partially dammed to provide a swimming hole for local visitors, and during the
tourist season, harbors numerous palapas.
