Playa Escondida & Playa Jicacal
Catemaco, Veracruz
Playa Escondida has been described as the most beautiful beach between the Yucatan and Florida. And it
will take a hair raising ride and a leg breaking walk to discover it.

Access is from a paved road leaving from north Catemaco towards Montepio. A dirt road branches off
towards the gulf, at approximately KM 28. About a mile downhill, the road branches left and uphill 1 mile to
Playa Escondida and right 200 feet to the Jicacal beach. Both beach areas are private property. If you are
coming by
pirata, you will have to walk from the highway.

Both beaches are surprisingly lonely spots, except during short holiday periods. They are the furthest
north west reaches of Catemaco and present a 6 mile beach walk along the Gulf to La Barra.

Playa Escondida
houses a dilapidated hotel and other facilities which are non functional most of the year. The access road is a
nightmare and not recommended to passenger cars.
The surroundings are heavily forested and house one of the few wild Howler monkey troops in the Tuxtlas. The bird
life is magnificent.
Access to the beach is via a very slippery walk and ill maintained, crumbling concrete steps down to the beach.
Nevertheless all the pain is worth it and the views are magnificent.
Playa Jicacal and Parador Icacos
is actually a private ranch of more than 100 hectares which are for sale.
The wide beach lies within a shallow bay book ended by rocky outcroppings, and most times of the year is idyllically
desolate. The hotel consists of a row of rooms in very bad condition and a beach front restaurant with a very limited
and infrequent menu. Parking for visitors is 30 pesos. I am told the hotel has been reconditioned Jun 08.
