March 2010.
Possibly the most famous brujo in Catemaco today, was not a brujo.

Julian Moreno Benitez, nicknamed "El Brujo", converted a boat engine repair, parts sales and an inheritance into the construction
of one of the first hotels on the Malecon overlooking Laguna  Catemaco.

When the Malecon was modernized, the city renamed one of the six promotories  that jut into Laguna  Catemaco, "Plaza del
Brujo" (Sorcerer's Square) in honor of him. When he died in 2004, a small bust of "El Brujo" sitting in a boat, was erected on that
plaza.

His Hotel del Brujo  now has 14 rooms, some with AC, but has no parking on the premises. Four of the rooms provide  amazing
views of the lake. The room decor is minimal but adequate, and maintenance is good. Rates are seasonal, ranging from 300 to
600 pesos.

The hotel was for sale for several years and is currently being managed by a leaseholder, who is not one of my favorite
people. The location on the Malecon is one of the best in Catemaco. Unfortunately weekends the area is the hangout of party
animals in Catemaco, requiring closed windows and AC for a good night.

One of the best features of the hotel are the views  of Catemaco and the lake from the hotel roof top.
