The preferred way to see Catemaco and Los Tuxtlas, just after a ride in an air conditioned Hummer,
is by the use of feet.

Except for community and commercial events, most hiking in Los Tuxtlas is on an individual basis.
There are no official trails, and really detailed maps are not available. If you browse through the
catemaco.info or tuxtlas.com pages you will find numerous ideas of where to walk.

Estacíon Biologica Tropical Los Tuxtlas jungle trails
The station is not too happy allowing stragglers to hike its virgin jungle, but it is possible.

take the water taxi to the Los Amigos  mini eco- resort, and then hike around to La Chorrera. There, wait for the ferry to La
Barra and hail a water taxi to return to Sontecomapan. Total maybe 5 km.

Community Sponsored Guided Hikes
Several ecotouristic communities provide guided hikes around their areas.
Most popular are Miguel Hidalgo,  Adolfo Lopez Mateos and Las Margaritas for their hill climbs through the
forests of the foothills of the Sierra Santa Marta. Laguna Sontecomapan has a mangrove walk.
