| 1917 Laguna Catemaco is declared Patrimonio Nacional (national patrimony) 1937 The valley of Laguna Catemaco is declared a federal protected zone, encompassing about 28,500 hectares. 1967 The National University of Mexico founds the Los Tuxtlas Tropical Biology Station, now encompassing 640 hectares. 1979 Around Volcano San Martin Tuxtla, about 5,533 hectares are declared a federal protected zone. 1980 The Sierra Santa Marta, about 83,000 hectares, is declared a federal protected zone. 1989 The University of Veracruz acquires 220 hectares near Nanciyaga and builds a Flora & Fauna research center 1991 The Grupo Ecologico Veracruzano de Rescate, A.C. acquires 300 hectares in the Santa Marta´s near Miguel Hidalgo Between 1990 and 1995 Nanciyaga and La Jungla, both on the shore of Laguna Catemaco declare their properties reserves. 1998 The state of Veracruz expropriates 6,318 hectares in the Sierra Santa Marta. 1998 A presidential decree expropriates 9,366 hectares in the Sierra Santa Marta, overlapping all of the state expropriations. 1998, November 13th A presidential decree combines the previously protected federal zones, except Laguna Catemaco, throws in the expropriated lands, and draws an even bigger polygon to form the Los Tuxtlas Biosphere, 155,123 hectares in total. 1998 Speech of Presidente Zedillo on inauguration of the Biosphere 2003 Veracruz State attempts to hand over management of Biosfera to Custodios de la Selva. Failed! 2004 First management plan for the Biosphere is proposed 2006 Consejo Asesor de la Reserva de la Biosfera - Los Tuxtlas is established.
