| The coastline of Catemaco stretches from 18 kilometers from Punta Escondida to the northwest to Río Carrizal coast consists of sand dunes with little vegetation, backed up by cattle pasture. The coast is split into halves by the inlet of the Sontecomapan lagoon. Access to the southern portion is via a one car boat towed ferry, or an unmaintained dirt road from Coxcoapan, near the village of Sontecomapan. The only significant settlement is the village of La Barra (population 286), devoted to fishing, cattle and tourism. Most of the properties along the coast consists of very large private and ejidal landholdings. The touristic potential of the coast is largely undeveloped because of poor access roads, lack of interest by large landowners and ineffective government. |
