| Catemaco Volcanoes |
| Catemaco nestles between the two major volcanic massifs in Los Tuxtlas, Volcano San MartinTuxtla and the Sierra Santa Marta. Only a few of the San Martin Tuxtla volcanoes lie in the Catemaco municipio. The majority of the volcanoes are to the east of Catemaco City in the Sierra Santa Marta. All of the volcanoes are dormant. The nearby Cerro Mono Blanco, "White Monkey Mountain", is possibly the most famous hill in Los Tuxtlas because of its association with witchcraft. It last erupted ca. 1250 BC. The most recent eruptions of Catemaco volcanoes were Nixtamalapan and Puntiagudo around 400 AD. |
