Leave Catemaco via the northern exit, so called "La Cruz" , towards the coast, passing Dos Amates.  Most of the paved road
is in fair condition with many speed bumps. App. 11 miles (half an hour) from Catemaco.

Yesterday was one of those beautiful days in Catemaco that make up for the occasional spells of bad
weather. So I decided to visit the port of Sontecomapan to see what´s new and eat some fresh fish.

I first passed the town to drive 1 mile further to visit the long promised Mangrove museum, which showed
some recent cosmetic construction, but is still far from being completed.

The La Cabañas ecotourism enterprise was as unattended as usual and shows serious lack of
maintenance of its facilities.

La Poza de los Enanos was attractive as ever, when there are few tourists. A lady shucking oysters
tempted me and I quickly swallowed a dozen of them laced with some fiery sauce that sent me running for
a cold beer. The oysters are small, but delicious.

Parking at the embarcadero was easy and the captain of the lancha that I usually use to visit La Barra, the
mangroves, or Los Amigos, explained to me that tourism during  the recent semana santa had been
disappointing. The new boat tour prices, probably did not help.

There are numerous restaurants around the embarcadero, serving the usual. I like the old lady that has a
few tables on the sidewalk and usually offers something a little unusual. Today it was fresh hash made
from local eels.

The new Hotel Imperial is being built a few blocks away, and has about 8 rooms open now. I was quoted
500 pesos for a room for 2 people, which I thought was too much.

The fish farm and restaurant "La Mojarra Chilanga" at the entrance of Sontecomapan still offers the
freshest mojarras from the clearest waters anywhere in Catemaco, and is always a worthwhile visit.

Four hours later I was back home in Catemaco looking for a tequila to take away the taste of the still
present oyster sauce.
