There are supposed to be 13 islands within Laguna Catemaco. Four are large enough to walk on, the rest barely support a tree. They seem to be remnants of volcanic cones.

Agaltepec means "en el cerro de las canoas" in a Nahuatl dialect, loosely translated to Canoe Hill.
Others claim it means "canda de piedra"?. Tourism promoters call it Crocodile Island, because of its
outline when seen from shore.
This is the largest island in the Laguna:
8.5 hectares, about 21 acres.
750 meters long, 150 meters at its widest, 30 meters at its highest point.
2461 feet long, 492 feet at its widest, 98 feet at its highest point.
About 1300 feet (400 meters) from Catemaco shore.
Archaeological digs suggest earlier fortification, and include a ball court, some earth mounds, and
residential remnants dated 1000 AD to 1500 AD.
The early Spanish settlers contemplated erecting a defensive fort on the island. Their successors
grazed cattle on the island until a few decades ago. Starting in the late 1800's the island was looted
of its archaeological treasures, including some pre Cortez copper articles.
A few years ago, the Universidad de Veracruz took over the island and stocked it with howler
monkeys. At present the island prohibits visitors.
