| The Catemaco coast stretches 18 km from north of Playa Escondida to the El Carrizal river. Several volcanic outcroppings at Playa Escondida, La Chorrera and El Morro alternate with sand dunes which are fenced to stop cattle from frolicking in the gulf waters. Laguna de Sontecomapan is the center of a watershed draining both the northeast sector of the Volcano San Martin Tuxtla foothills and the northwest sector of the Sierra Santa Marta. Numerous rivers and stream cross the landscape. None are of any major length or breadth, but they do turn into torrid monsters during heavy deluge days in the rainy season. Some can be explored by boats rentable at the embarcadero in Sontecomapan. Kayaking is possible on both the Yohualajapan and Coxcoapan rivers. |
