Musica de Catemaco y Los Tuxtlas
Son Jarocho is the folk music of Los Tuxtlas and Southern Veracruz. Son vaguely translates to song and
Jarocho is a nickname for a person from Veracruz, primarily from the port and the Papaloapan river delta.
Jarocho itself is an uncomplimentary term sometimes used in place of rude or blockhead.
The music originated from indigenous song and dance customs which after the Spanish invasion began to
absorb Spanish rhythms, followed by African drum beats and even the rhythms of invading French and
American soldier tunes.
